Karamoja remains one of the mysteries of Uganda, a zone which few fellow citizens reach, and where few travelers venture. It is an area, an economy and a culture which for many outsiders is captured in a few simplistic terms; “cattle raiders”, “warriors”, and “courtship rape”. All three suggest violence, disregard for fellow human beings, and in particular for women. In exploring these questions for the purposes of designing more context relevant and appropriate responses to SGBV, this report sheds considerable light on gender dynamics among the Jie in Kotido district, and thus offers an important contribution to our understanding of these issues not just in that particular community, but also in agro-pastoralist communities in the wider region.

Briefing Notes and Special Reports
Aside from working papers and seminars the RLP produces a range of publications for multiple purposes. The research is targeted at a range of audiences (eg academia, government officials or the public) and aims to produce information quickly on time-sensitive issues. These result in special reports compiled either through individual consultancies or for external publications, including briefing notes that represent immediate but preliminary observations from the field, letters sent to the national newspapers or advocacy briefs that attempt to bring attention to specific thematic areas.
