Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict

From 10-14 June 2014 the Refugee Law Project (RLP) participated in the week-long Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, at the Excel Centre in London, a key event that was attended by 72 ministers, 103 countries and over 1,000 participants from around the globe. Key discussions and recommendations during this week-long event focused on accountability, support for survivors, security and justice sector reform and international cooperation.

With important contributions from a range of dignitaries, notably the British Foreign Secretary William Hague, the UN Special Envoy Angelina Jolie, the UN representative on sexual violence in conflict Zainab Bangura, and United States Secretary of State John Kerry, this event was a landmark in pushing for global synergy and demonstrated international commitment to ending sexual violence in conflict as well as violence in times of ‘peace.’

From Uganda, Hon. Oryem Henry Okello, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs/International Affairs, commendably represented Uganda, supported by the active participation of a handful of Ugandan civil society organizations including Refugee Law Project. RLP was also invited to present at the Mini-summit in Kampala organized by the British High Commission in Kampala on Tuesday 9 June 2014. Our Head of Operations & Programme Support, Mr. Walter Richard Aliker presented on “Ending Sexual Violence in Conflict – Priorities for Uganda.”

Prior to this historic event, RLP also provided input into the International Protocol on the Documentation and Investigation of Sexual Violence in Conflict during a consultative meeting organized in Kampala.

Below are copies of four presentations made during the Summit by Dr. Chris Dolan - Director RLP, Mr. Walter Richard Aliker – Head of Operations & Programme Support and Mr. Onen David Ongwech - Programme Manager Gender & Sexuality.
