Angella Nabwowe Kasule

Communications Advisor - Angella is a Communications Advisor at the RLP where she provides direction to the Project's Communication, advocacy and outreach activities. Prior to joining RLP, Angella worked as a news editor at Simba Radio, a local Ugandan radio station, where she coordinated and reported extensively on issues of freedom of expression, human rights, governance and democracy.
She has participated in various high level trainings and meetings including the Uppsala University Top Level Seminar on Peace and Security (TOPS AFRICA), the Oxford University Summer School on Global Media Policy, Technology and New Themes in Media Regulation, East African School of Refugee and Humanitarian Affairs at University of Dar es salaam.
She holds a B.A. Mass Communication from Makerere University, and an M.A in Global Journalism from Orebro University, Sweden

Office Assistant - She Join Kitgum Peace Documentation Center in April 2011 a week after inauguration of the center. She helps in maintaining the center clean.

Dieudonne Maganya

Video Advocacy Assistant - Dieudonne has been working with the Refugee Law Project since October 2008 as a Community Interpreter where he interpreted and translated for the Legal and Psychosocial Department. With a background in Video and Filming, he is working as a Video Advocacy Assistant in the Research and Advocacy Department since May 2011.

Dr Chris Dolan

Director - Chris joined the project in August 2006. With a background in issues of forced migration and conflict, he now has the ambitious task of transforming the RLP from a project into a fully-fledged institute and leader on justice and forced migration issues in East Africa and beyond.

  Fred Ssekandi
Fred Ssekandi

Logistician - Affectionately known as "Speaker", Fred joined us in January 2006 when RLP expanded its vehicle fleet. He has since taken part in field trips to Adjumani, Apac, Lira, Arua, and Pader. His experience has proven invaluable in traversing some tricky areas, particularly Apac in the rainy season, or those barely maintained roads in Pader.

Accounts Officer - Grace has kept stock of everything at RLP from fuel to furniture since January 2004. As part of the finance department, she is responsible for monitoring the budgets, salaries, expenses, requisitions and everything else in between.

Leonard Mukiibi

Office Assistant - Mukiibi has served RLP since the beginning as a volunteer in 2000, and joined full-time in November 2001. He has been invaluable in providing logistic support to all the departments, as well as ensuring the maintenance and safe-keeping of office equipment, generators, and anything that needs repair.

Mathias Nyanzi

I.T. Supervisor - Mathias joined RLP in October 2007 as part time web developer & I.T. support volunteer under the Beyond Juba Project. He became a full time staff as I.T. Assistant in 2008 and currently serving as I.T. Supervisor in the ICT unit. He has been vital in the technical design, development and maintenance of the RLP and its projects websites including the Refugee Law Project website, the Beyond Juba Project website, Karamoja - Changing the Lens website and the Civil Society Coalition website.

Security Officer - Willy joined RLP in July 2007 as a security guard, and he is responsible for protecting the RLP premises and property against intrusion and theft.

Moses Alfred Nsubuga

I.C.T. Officer - Moses joined RLP in March 2005 as a volunteer in the Information Center, but was later confirmed Information Officer in January 2006. Currently, he is the ICT Officer managing the Information Center as well as all I.T. related issues at RLP.

Personal Assistant to the Director - Onen is a Psychologist by profession and holds a First Class Degree in Arts and Social Sciences (Majored in Psychology whereas Minored in Sociology) from Kyambogo University. He joined RLP in August 2011.

Opiny Shaffic

Video Advocacy Assistant - Shaffic joined the RLP as a video Advocacy Assistant in May 2011. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Development Studies from Gulu University. Having dealt with digital media for over five years, he has wealth of experience and working knowledge in media, dealing with people from diverse origin and experiences. He is tasked with digital media production of RLP projects under the Video advocacy unit.

  Patrick Otim
Patrick Otim

Video Advocacy Officer - Patrick holds a Bachelors Degree in Mass communication and a Diploma in Computer Science and Information Technology. He joined the RLP in October 2006 as a Data Management Officer, in the Research and Advocacy Department. Within a space of one and a half years, an opportunity to strengthen his advocacy skills through video presented itself and he was able to attend a 2-weeks intensive training in Video Advocacy in Concordia University - Canada. It is from this point that the Video Unit can be marked to have started at the RLP. A new advocacy tool through filming took shape to compliment the famous RLP working papers, which has seen the production of numerous in-house documentaries to date. This development has seen Patrick play a central role in most of RLP documentaries including the 2009 award winner at the Kenya International Film Festival - "Gender Against Men". He currently has a full-length film to his name titled "We Died Long Time Ago".

Salima Namusobya

Grants Manager / Senior Legal Advisor - Salima is a lawyer by profession and hold an LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa. She joined the RLP in January 2005 and took over from Angela Nagaga as Head of Legal and Psychosocial Department in November 2005 a position she held until January 2010. She now serves as a Grants Manager / Senior Legal Advisor. She is also the team leader for the Durable Solutions Programme.

Volunteer - Video Advocacy - Solomon Joined RLP as a Video Advocacy Volunteer in March 2010. He holds a Higher Education Diploma in Digital Media and a City & Guilds Diploma in Video Production Techniques both attained form Lambeth College in UK. He also hold a Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication.

EFA / RU Coordinator - Robert holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Project Planning & Management from Ugamda Management Institute, a Diploma in Youth in Development from Makerere University, and a Bachelor's degree in Adult and Community Education from Kyambogo University. He joined RLP in July 2009 as Volunteer-FAL Instructor. He is specifically involved in coordinating /training learners in the English for Adults program, Community policing program.

Volunteer Language Instructor - Simon joined the RLP in February 2011 as a Volunteer Language Instructor. Simon is a graduate of Makerere University with a BA in Education (Literature and English language). He is a trained social worker, with keen interest in areas of education and public health. He is pursuing masters in Public Health.

Winifred Agabo

Head, Education & Training Department - Winnie is a teacher/trainer by profession. She holds a diploma and BA Education. She joined the RLP in December 2000 and began training police, immigration officers, magistrates, judges, district officials hosting refugees and IDPs, religious leaders, teachers and NGOs dealing with forced migrants in Uganda. She was appointed Head of the Education & Training department in 2004. Since then she has organized and taught courses on Refugee Law and Human Rights and other issues related to forced migrants. She has also conducted extensive field research in refugee settlements and IDP camps which constitute RLP working papers.

Arnold Kwesiga

Volunteer Intake Officer - Arnold joined the RLP in January 2010. He is involved in the in-take process of all RLP clients and helps in general client assessments and taking of testimonies. He holds a great passion for protection and implementation of human rights and the prevalence of constitutionalism. Arnold is currently pursuing his Law degree from Makerere University.

Trainee Assessment Assistant - Lydia is a Development worker with a Bachelors in Development studies. She joined the RLP in may 2011 as a Trainee Assessment Assistant and is responsible for the assessment of clients, clients' file opening and testimony taking.

Child Rights Lawyer - Berna started work with Refuge Law Project in March 2010 as a volunteer lawyer and later on took on the position of Child Rights Lawyer from September 2010 to date. As a Child Rights Lawyer, she works under the Child Rights and protection Program. She is involved in legal representation, legal advice for both refugee and asylum seeker children, field visits among other activities in the organization.

Volunteer, Legal Officer - Atona joined the RLP in 2009 as a legal volunteer and is involved in the Access to Justice Programme that embodies three thematic areas: Detention, Domestic Relations and Tenancy.
Objective: Providing legal aid to the indigents and vulnerable persons.

Access to Justice Lawyer - Charity holds a post graduate Diploma in Legal practice Bar course and a Bachelors Degree in Law MUK. She joined RLP as a volunteer lawyer in 2010 and was later confirmed as Access to Justice Lawyer. she is specifically involved in legal representation, intake process and providing legal advice.

  Eunice Owiny
Eunice Owiny

Psychosocial Counseling Advisor and Head of Legal and Psychosocial Department - Eunice holds a BA Hons in Social Administration and Philosophy, and an MA Philosophy from Makerere University; Certificates in Trauma Counseling, Refugee Law, Durable Solutions, Forced Migration and Refugee studies, Stress Management. She has been working at the RLP since 2005 when the Counseling unit became part of the Legal Aid Department. Her work is centered on helping in the psychological healing, building positive attitudes towards change and trauma management for clients and stress management for staff.
Eunice in her own words describes her motivating principles; "While we do not choose pain, we can choose what to do with painful experiences. Every human being is an invaluable asset. Honor, trust and respect will motivate them to release the best in them. There are no elevators to the house of success; we must therefore climb the stairs".

  Gerald Siranda Blacks
Gerald Siranda Blacks

Gender Psychosocial worker - Gerald is Psychosocial Development worker by profession. He holds bachelor's degree in Ethics and Development Studies, an advanced diploma in Social sciences, a post graduate Diploma in Gender and Human Rights and he is currently a Candidate for the MA in Gender, Human Rights and Sexuality. He joined the RLP in 2007 as a volunteer social worker and he was part of the team that helped in the starting on the SGBV section. Later on he became the SGBV/P/SRHR/HIV and AIDS consultant and he is currently the Gender Psychosocial Worker and the focal person on HIV/AIDS and sexual reproductive health rights. He is responsible for carying out home visits, assesing needs of SGBV/P clients, giving psychosocial support to SGBV/P clients, assisting in the coordination of the SGBV/P medical cases, coordinating health care and other services providers offering services to the SGBV/P and HIV/AIDS and SRHR to refugees in Kampala. Gerald has also been an integral member of the Research and Legal Aid teams that have visited the field to provide onsite counseling in the refugee settlements.

Legal Officer - Currently our longest serving legal officer, Godwin came to RLP in September 2002. He has been actively involved in representing refugees all over the country, sometimes going as far afield as Arua.

Lisa Rebecca Aaca

Intake Officer - Lisa is a social worker by profession. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Social Work and Social Administration, a post graduate diploma in Project Planning and Management, and is currently finalising an M.A in Social Sector Planning and Management from Makerere University. She joined the RLP in 2008 as the first In-take officer and is currently coordinating the Community Interpretation programme and also heads the Assessment and In-take teams that handle assessment, file opening, file coordination, internal referrals, testimony taking and advising RLP's clients on where to get appropriate assistance.

Maryjane Biira

Child Rights Officer - Maryjane joined RLP in October 2010. She is involved in offering psychosocial support to refugee children on the Child Rights and protection programe. Maryjane does counseling, conducts home visits and programe research and documentation.

Salome Atim

Gender Officer - Salome joined the RLP in March 2009 as a Gender Officer in the Legal and Psychosocial Department. She previously worked with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee as the, specialist Education and Gender and SGBV Officer, and Ministry of water, Lands and Environment as a social worker. Her passion for respect of human rights and gender concerns in particular are her driving force. Currently she is the focal officer of SGBVP aspect of the gender program and is involved in advocacy and networking, fundraising, counselling and making appropriate referrals, education and training of stakeholders, writing opinion pieces when needed and documentation.

Legal Officer - saphina is an advocate of the High court of Uganda. She joined RLP in 2008 as an intern on the DANIDA internship programme for six months and later become a Legal Officer in January 2009. She specifically co-ordinates the Anti-Torture programme and the activities of the Legal Aid Service Providers Network(LASPNET)

Wilson Senyonyi

Volunteer - Counselor - Holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences ( Hons ) from Makerere University and a Certificate in Counseling. He has worked in the field of counseling for the last three years and currently is working as a Volunteer Counselor with Refugee Law Project. His many duties are to Counsel Refugees, Carrying out research and referring refugees for treatment and rehabilitation to different service providers.

Yusrah Nagujja Kuteesa

Persons with Disabilities Officer - Yusrah joined RLP in September 2010. She coordinates the Person with Disabilities and Elderly program activities, offering psychosocial support to the disabled and elderly refugees, conducting home visits, program research and documentation and making referrals for clients to various organizations. Yusrah holds a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work and Social Administration from Makerere University, a post graduate diploma in Project Planning and Management, and is currently pursuing a Master's in Social Sector Planning and Management at Makerere University

Volunteer Research Assistant - Stella joined RLP in September 2010 as a volunteer for the Kitgum Peace Documentation Center. She holds BA Development Studies from Uganda Christian University. She is currently in charge of Communication and Outreach Activities at the center.

  Andrew Simbo
Andrew Simbo

Programme Manager, Kitgum Peace Documentation Center - Andrew is a Development and Human Rights specialist and has had vast experience studying and working in Sierra Leone, Kenya, Tanzania, Liberia and Zambia. He also visited The Hague in the Netherlands in 2009 to observe the Charles Taylor Trial. He worked inter alia as a United Nations Volunteer in Tanzania, did War Crimes documentation work for the American Bar Association (ABA) and was the ICRC focal person for organizing annual moot court completion for Tertiary students in Sierra Leone. His last assignments were to serve, for the past 10 years, in the Outreach Sections of both No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ) and the UN backed Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL)

Denis Barnabas Otim

Project Officer - Denis Barnabas Otim holds a Master in Peace and Governance from Africa University in Zimbabwe and a BA. Hons in Development Studies with specialization in Rural and Regional Development from Gulu University. He joined RLP in May 2011 as Project Officer. Denis has been engaged in conflict and peace building work in Uganda with proven experience in the field of research, human rights, social justice and governance. He obtained trainings and skills in Collaborative Problem Based Learning and Conflict Prevention (from Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre) in Accra, Ghana, Peace Support Operations, Conduct of Humanitarian Relief Operations, International Humanitarian Law and the Law of Armed Conflict, Peacekeeping and International Conflict Resolution (from Peace Operations Training Institute) and a certificate in Conflict Analysis from United States Institute of Peace. His research interests are governance, democracy and resource based conflicts.

Research Associate - Katie is currently conducting two years of doctoral fieldwork in Uganda. Her doctoral studies are based in the Department of Anthropology at the School of Global Studies, University of Sussex. Katie holds an MA (honours) in Social Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh. Since completing an MA in the Anthropology of Conflict, Violence and Conciliation at the University of Sussex she has been focusing upon the ways in which refugees and asylum seekers represent their experiences, and how they interact with human rights discourses. Upon being awarded an Economic and Social Research Council (UK) Studentship in 2009, Katie has undertaken an MSc in Cross-Cultural and Comparative Research Methods and begun work on her doctorate exploring the 'Structures of Suffering' of refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo in Uganda.

African Transitional Justice Network (ATJN) Regional Coordinator for the Great Lakes Region - Levis Onegi is the African Transitional Justice Network (ATJN) Regional Coordinator for the Great Lakes Region based at the Refugee Law Project. Levis holds a B.A (Hons) in Political Science and an MA in Public Administration from Makerere University, Kampala-Uganda. Levis previously worked for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) as a Protection Officer and Resettlement Expert/Consultant in Uganda, Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia. His research interest focuses on transitional justice, conflict analysis, forced migration and gender.

  Lyandro Komakech
Lyandro Komakech

Senior Research and Advocacy Officer - Lyandro is currently the lead researcher on traditional Justice Mechanisms in Uganda. His writings include Transitional Justice Working paper No.1 titled; Tradition in Transition; Drawing on The Old to Develop a New Jurisprudence for Dealing with Uganda's Legacy of Violence and a Book Chapter titled Exploring the Place of Traditional Justice in Uganda. He holds a Masters Degree in Development Studies from Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi, Masters Degree in International Relations and Diplomatic Studies from Makerere University Kampala, Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences with a major in International Relations- Makerere University as well as Associate Bachelors Degree in Development Studies from Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi- Uganda. His research interest includes peace and conflict analysis, transitional justice, forced migration and international human rights law.

Moses Chrispus Okello

Senoir Research & Advocacy Advisor(Former Head of Research & Advocacy Dept) - Moses first joined the RLP as a volunteer in 2000-2001. After completing his Master's in International Human Rights Law and post Graduate Diploma in Forced Migration Refugee Studies at the American University in Cairo (AUC), he returned to the RLP as a Research & Advocacy Officer in January 2005. He has conducted research across many regions of Uganda and has contributed to a number of RLP publications. In addition Moses has contributed book chapters as well as published in internationally acclaimed peer reviewed journals. Moses has also recently been requested to join the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Transitional Justice. Moses' research interests include conflict analysis, forced migration, transitional justice and international human rights law more broadly.

Okot Komakech Deo

Volunteer Research Assistant - Deo is a Social Worker, with a Bachelor's Degree of Arts in Social Science attained from Makerere University Kampala. He Joined Refugee Law Project in September 2010 as a Volunteer Research Assistant for the Kitgum Peace Documentation Center. He is currently in charge of Developing the Museum / Archive - and directly responsible for conflict event mapping, collection, preservation, and recording of images and artifacts relating to the conflicts in the North and other parts of Uganda.

Stephen Oola

Ag. Head of Research and Advocacy Department - He is also Ag. Coordinator of the DFID funded Advisory Consortium on Conflict Sensitivity (ACCS). He holds a Masters of Arts Degree in International Peace Studies from University of Notre Dame- USA and a Law Degree (Hons) from Makerere University-Kampala, Uganda. He also has a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre-Kampala and a Post Graduate Diploma in Conflict Management and Peace Studies (PGC) from Gulu University- Gulu, Uganda. Oola is an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda. Oola's interest and research area is in forced migration governance, human rights, transitional justice and peace building. Oola is currently leading the National Reconciliation and Transitional Justice (NR &TJ) Audit-a Country-wide study to map out conflicts and their legacies in Uganda and its ramifications to transitional justice initiatives.
