Research Assistants
Research Assistants are needed by the Research & Advocacy Department on an ad hoc basis depending on field research requirements and specific locations to be visited. Research assistants must have a proven experience in conducting both qualitative and quantitative research programmes independently, self-motivated and able to work in a small, tight-knit team in isolated environments, able to translate to English while taking notes, and have excellent English writing skills. Field research may involve interacting directly with refugees or internally displaced persons, who may have limited English language skills, and may be asked extremely sensitive information. Thus, researchers will need to exhibit tact and confidentiality, while having the language skills to a level of fluency that enables technical discussions to take place in the interview subject's native language.

To add your name to our database of research assistants, please write to including:

  1. A current CV that includes the relevant local language skills and level of fluency in each language.
  2. A writing sample in both English and the specific languages listed as 'fluent' in your CV.

Research Assistants will be paid a competitive research fee for time spent in the field, as well as per diems to cover costs incurred while living in the field. Reliable and competent research assistants are likely to be retained for future field research, but those who do not prove themselves in the field may be removed from the database.

NB: Examples of desirable languages include, but are not limited to: Kiswahili (especially Congolese variants), Lingala, Luo, Lugbara, Kinyarwanda, Karimojong, Iteso, Madi, Arabic (especially Juba Arabic), French, Somali, Amheric, etc.
